What is CPU-PACKAGE-TEMP-LIMIT?
The CPU package temperature has reached or exceeded the manufacturer's maximum junction temperature (Tjmax), typically 100°C for Intel and 95°C for AMD. The processor initiates emergency thermal shutdown to prevent permanent silicon degradation. This is different from throttling — the system halts completely.
Common Causes
- Insufficient CPU cooler TDP rating
- Dried thermal paste
- Blocked airflow in case
Step-by-Step Fix Guide
-
1
Replace thermal paste with premium compound
Replacing thermal paste (first fix) resolves the majority of unexpected CPU thermal shutdown events.
-
2
Upgrade CPU cooler
If temperatures remain high with new paste, a cooler upgrade is necessary.
-
3
Improve case airflow with additional fans
